A labeling regime has been put into place for genetically modified food and organism by the Indian government. The US has issued two notifications with the WTO challenging the labeling law. India should take US-backed WTO attempts to thrust GM foods on us with a pinch of salt.

Beginning August 2005, Sharad Pawar began making noises about impending imports of wheat. Not many took him seriously. By announcing an Minimum Support Price (MSP) way below the prevailing market rate, he ensured that wheat imports do happen. This was however preceded by a series of steps taken by the government to not procure from farmers and instead build a case for imports.
